Fluoride Treatment

What is Fluoride treatment?

What is fluoride and why do I need it? The type of fluoride treatment most utilized in dentistry today is a 5% Sodium Fluoride Varnish. The treatment only takes a few minutes. A thin layer of the varnish is painted on the teeth. This coating sticks directly to the enamel, which allows for adequate time for the teeth to take in the benefits. Fluoride helps prevent demineralization and enhances remineralization. Demineralized areas where the enamel is weakening. These demineralized spots are at a high risk for turning into decay. In some cases, incipient lesions (beginning stage cavities) can re-mineralize and the decay can be arrested, preventing the need for restorative work.  The benefits of fluoride are not solely related to cavities either. Fluoride varnish also has the ability to improve everyday tooth sensitivity and helps keep the teeth strong. Teeth treated with fluoride varnish are less likely to chip or break down due to everyday wear. Adding fluoride varnish into your routine dental visits leads to healthier and stronger teeth.
